Out: ‘torture’.
In: ‘alternative interrogation methods‘.
Though Bush said the United States never tortures suspects, “alternative” interrogation methods are used to glean information from them. These procedures “were tough, and they were safe and lawful and necessary,” he said.
I think we can get more mileage out of this term.
The new movie ‘Path to 9/11‘ isn’t pure fiction; it’s ‘alternative history’.
Religion and new-age fakeism can be ‘alternative science’.
The Bush team doesn’t tell lies; they’re offering an ‘alternative reality’.
Remember how much you enjoyed ‘alternative music’ back in the 90s? You were listening to Better Than Ezra while everyone else was doing the Macarena, but who’s laughing now? This’ll be just like that. You’ll love it.
After all, what does it matter if it’s true, as long as you’re happy?

What’s wrong with the Macarena hey? Gets everyone on the dance floor doesn’t it? I’ll bet you even know the moves, Daniel. But yes, it is quite the shoddy piece of music.

So many things wrong with the Macarena but unfortunatley, like the Nutbush, we all know it. Or maybe I just have too many gay friends? Sorry Daniel, hijacking your post with frivolities again.

Mmm Nutbush dancing. That brings back memories of a large group of 18-35 year olds in the bar of an Amsterdam hotel teaching a group of Dutch bridge players (old ladies) how to do the Nutbush dance. What a fantastic night.

Speaking of “good” music, listen to Classic FM (97.7FM) on Sunday 24th to hear W.A. Youth Orchestra play Shostakovich’s “Symphony No. 5”. We played it at the concert hall in May and it was great. I’m in it, which is also great.
If you’re interested, we have a concert in 2 weeks (Saturday 23rd September @ Perth Concert Hall) where we are playing “Enigma Variations” (Elgar), “Cockaigne” (Elgar) and “Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra” (Britten). We’re rehearsing hard and I’m really looking forward to it. If you want tickets, let me know and I can give you phone numbers etc.

Have you seen V for Vendetta? It makes some nice comments about redescriptions – it mentions ‘rendition’ and ‘collateral’.
Bush clearly has an ‘alternative intelligence’.
