I was only just yesterday thinking about the surveys done by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press, and wondering when they would release a new one. (No, really, I was.) And now there’s a new one.

The reason I like the Pew surveys is that they sometimes ask the following question:

Please tell me what one word best describes your impression of George W. Bush. Tell me just the ONE best word that describes him.

Check the summary or for more info, view the PDF.

You actually get a maximum of two choices. What would you say? It’s hard to think of just two. I’d pick ‘incompetent’ and ‘liar’. And it seems I’m not alone. This time, ‘incompetent’ takes the lead!

‘Liar’ didn’t even get a mention in May 2003 when Bush was getting all his really great lying done. But it’s now surpassed ‘honest’, the favourite for years. ‘Ass’ and ‘jerk’ are coming up just a tick.

Interestingly, the term ‘Christian’ is also up this time. Which, I suppose, is the one thing his supporters can always claim. He may be an incompetent liar, an arrogant idiot, an untrustworthy jerk, an egotistical stupid ass. But, by God, the man is a Christian. And that’s good enough for them.

Update: I have just realised that more people responded with “Ass” than “President”. Discuss.
