Swearing interview

I had an interview this morning on 6PR radio in Perth. Subject: the Swearing Class! Have a listen.

(4.5 MB)

It was fun being on radio. But they cut my joke at the end! It finishes: “…you go to Heck.” Oh, well, maybe it was better that they cut it.

  1. I can’t believe they cut you off at the last part! It sounds like a really great course. I bet you will have a lot of fun with it.

Congrats on getting on the radio!

  2. That was great Daniel! You really sold it, I’m sure they’ll be fighting for a place on the course.

We had our lecture on euphemism, swearing and taboo words a couple of weeks ago, it was interesting, not to mention quite hilarious (probably enhanced by the lecturers British accent while he was reeling off the ‘big six’ four lettered words). I especially loved the fact that, as you were saying, these words aren’t generally written down and their origins are hard to trace, some of the earliest examples of them are people’s nicknames in official records. I pity the poor fellow that is now forever recorded in history as ‘Richard Shitbag’. I also loved the vulgarly named lane that appears in many medieval cities, I’m assuming in the red light district, containing a certain ‘c’ word.

I noticed the appearance of a very recent word in that interview – ‘impactful’. The earliest I could find usage of that, in my hasty search, is 2003. I think it might just catch on and remain in general usage – it seems to be on of those words that sneaks in under the radar because people aren’t sure if it really is a word or not. I guess it is now!

  3. How far in advance did you know that the interview was going to happen? I was awake early this morning, could I have listened to it? Ah well, at least there’s a recording. And it’s great.
I’m sooo putting my name down when the $$$ rolls in. You might have to get a bigger room than what they normally use.

  4. I also heard that you were on The Weakest Link at one point? Got a recording of that so I can beat Laura at answering the questions?
That’s a challenge oh Laura! The gauntlet is thrown for general knowledge nerdiness. I was on It’s Academic and we won! Wooo!
Yes, this is procrastination and another comment brought to you by Stream of Consciousness(c).
I’ve been using http://www.badspelling.com as a distractor as well.
    OK. Back to it.

  5. That was a treat – hearing your voice! I was amused to hear that you appear to have retained your accent but adopted the rising inflexion of your hosts. I love the name of the programme – what was it ‘intellectual adventures’ or something similar (my memory is hopeless these days)

  6. A little Daniel Trivia-

Daniel had his own Radio show, Broadcast over a very large area from our local University, in the 6th grade. (age 12?)

He has been enjoying bringing new music to people for a long time.

    -segway-

    “Friday Random Five”

Prod note- Dan needs some theme music.

  7. Ha! I remember that. I think there might even be some film of me at the control desk somewhere. I think the station could cover a mile and a half when the wind was right.

I do have theme music, and it’s kind of a cross between the James Bond theme and ‘Mildred Pierce’ by Sonic Youth. But ska.

Yes, I was on ‘The Weakest Link’ in Australia. I’ve been meaning to have a viewing party.

  8. That’s spooky. When I was 12 I used to make my own radio shows in my bedroom – not broadcast, just taped on an old reel to reel 4 track (well it wasn’t old in 1968). I created comedy programmes, music (me playing piano or guitar) and special novelty acts (teeth music I recall being one of them). I also managed to rig up a way of overdubbing so I could record guitar and piano tracks but synchronisation was a little tricky. Only child syndrome I think

  9. Right. I’ll dig out my It’s Academic video if we can see The Weakest Link. Sound fair?

  10. On the “impactful” note, apparently a “learned journal” had this word in it arond 1973 at this linky:
    http://www.worldwidewords.org/articles/exceedance.htm

  11. Ddn’t hear the radio show because of pathetically slow internet, but did you know there’s a variation of Russian called Mat’ that is made almost entirely of expletives? It originated in the criminal prison population (where else?), but is now-a-days given grudging respect because of its incredible inventiveness. It has its own conjugations, and might even qualify as a dialect.
