Good Reason

It's okay to be wrong. It's not okay to stay wrong.

It’s all in how you cover the women.

From the news:

Two senior Vatican officials on Tuesday joined a growing list of European political and religious leaders expressing concern over the use of some Muslim veils by Islamic women immigrants.

What they’re not saying in the article is that they’re concerned that women who are covered up are emboldened by their anonymity, and may commit acts of terrorism.

So, in the public interest, here’s a tutorial.

This is acceptable. Not even remotely close to being a terrorist. I mean, come on.

This is the wrong way. Scary and bad. So obviously a terrorist.

The Vatican would do a lot better with me around. I’m serious.

  1. Growing nationalism throughout the world, fear and mistrust of immegrants being faned and used by politicians. Hmmm. Deja vu.

Even without beleiving in the karmic wheel, why does mankind seem trapped inside the circle of its own behaviour?

  2. If you’re trying to compare a nun to a muslim I think you are wrong. For One thing it’s been a long long time since nuns have worn those old type cover-ups. And – nuns outfits as well as female muslim garbs were to imitate “Mary” in that the woman were to keep themselves properly covered (nothing ever that they cover their face, other than maybe in travel in the blowing sand storms to protect their eyes) So much has been changed throughout history to satisfy radical people who like only to believe in mans inhumanity to man . It’s a shame that people don’t go to libraries and read OLD history books instead of todays PC books and learn the truth of the various groups of people from the middle east, europe , asia and even the u.s. and australia.

  3. Well I can vouch that many of the Nuns In South America still wear full habits. And I’m farly sure the Muslim women aren’t trying to imitate “Mary”. I’m also pretty sure the Idea predated mary by several thousand years as did the idea of a virgin birth. (I think the first virgin birth story was writen down about 10,ooo years ago). and the rest, well I’m not even sure what to say about the rest anon. I wish you a happy life.

  4. First, The imitation of “Mary” goes back to the original intent of Muhamed as ordered by the Angel Gabriel in a revalation. This was in a book by the Rev. Bishop Fulton Sheen where He was talking about the odd parallels he found in the original edicts of islam. I am not defending islam – far from it. I just get a little ticked when I see anything about Nuns, what with having a few in several different generations and all in the medical profession. They have been all over the world teaching and curing and in the old times working with the incurables in the leper colonies. So excuse Me if I offended You in any way but for some religion is a peaceful respite. I myself believe that if God is everywhere – why go to church and only on sunday. I just take a moment when needed and reflect as do my Brothers and Sons. And none of them have ever had the desire to lob off the heads of anyone who disagrees with them.

  5. Hey, I think I’ve heard this one before. What’s the difference between a nun and a Muslim woman? But seriously, folks, why is it that religions of the world like to wrap women in layers of gauze? Are they like presents for God? Or is there something in the feminine that authoritarian men can’t stand?

Good to have you on the board, anonymous. If you can direct me to some PC history books, I’d be most interested.

  6. Hey, I remember Fulton Sheen! When I was in York on my mission, there was a sort of canonization drive for him. A guy came up from London to address the local Catholic congregation (I used to drag my companions to other churches on Sundays) and present a sort of saintly sales pitch for the late Rev.

He gave a really nice speech about how, with all the troubles in the world today, there’s never been a greater need for modern saints. (“So, what you’re saying then father, is that we need more Latter-day Saints?”)

We were given little prayer cards to ask for Fulton Sheen’s intervention so that God could glorify him, with an address to report any miracles to so that he could be made a saint. The other missionaries got very upset with me when I actually used it during one of those pre-flat-exit prayers ;P

I’ve never read his books, but he sounded like a pretty good guy.

  7. I am sorry, but I am having a hard time seeing how Muslim clothing was used to imitate Mary. Are we saying that Mary is the first woman to dress this way? Are we saying that no one else in her time dressed as she did? Somehow I do not see that Mary was this radical fashionista in her time period spawning others to follow her stylish ways. Your statement makes absolutely no sense to me whatsoever.

It is one thing to say that nuns and Muslim women choose to wear what Mary wore in her time, but that is not how you have presented your case. You chose a man of Christianity as a source of your knowledge. Is this not a biased decision? Had you cited from an Islamic source, I would find this statement far more credible.

As for the OLD history books, as an historian I can tell you that they are not always correct either. Have you read Ulrich B. Philip’s books depicting blacks as “Sambo” and inferior to whites? They are described as being happy to be beneath whites. It is quite charming. Of course there is the ever accurate The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. Truly a correct and a non-biased work. Ask any Christian who has read it. He is not very kind to them.

I could give you a list of debunked works by historians that has nothing to do with being politically correct. Just because the histories are older, does not mean that are not written with presentism or are written more accurately.

  8. lol Dan – don’t get me started!

  9. Hello Lauren,

Just out of curiousity. How has the Will Durant world history series held up over time. In his favor I do remember that in his intro he does state that he expected 80% of what he had to say to turn out to be false. I just loved his writing style. Does that series count as OLD Anon?

  10. Hey Jeffrey,

To be honest, I have never read any of his works as they don’t deal with Colonial America. Of course I could be mistaken, but it is not something that I have come across in my research to date. I’m not even going to claim I have much knowledge of him as he hasn’t been mentioned in any of my classes.

I am curious to know if his being a philosopher is the reason he is not referred to in history courses. I think it is pretty interesting that he believed that his histories would be debunked at some point in time. I now need to go find these books. Of course the library here makes Hunter College’s library seem like the Library of Congress.

As for being an OLD history, I think it passes, but we might have to go back as far as Bede.
