Good Reason

It's okay to be wrong. It's not okay to stay wrong.

What colour is your church?

It’s not liberal atheists burning down black churches; it’s white Christians.

Three Birmingham college students were arrested and charged Wednesday in connection with a string of Alabama church fires that is described in court papers as a joke that “got out of hand,” authorities said.

Huh. I don’t get it. Maybe it’s Brother Theodore funny rather than Seinfeld funny.

They burned down five churches with predominantly black congregations, and four with white.

Moseley told investigators that he and Cloyd set the other four fires “as a diversion to throw investigators off,” the affidavit states. When questioned by investigators, “Moseley said the diversion obviously did not work.”

Of course, burning down black churches is a seasonal sport in the American South. I remember hearing about a similar spate of arson around 1992. I was discussing it with a Utah girl at the time. She was amazed that people were burning down black churches.

Finally she said, “Why don’t they just paint the churches a different colour?”

“God bless you, my good woman,” I said.

  1. According to local reports, the black churches were not the first ones burned so (for once) I don’t believe the fires were racially motivated.

And unless the Methodists are somehow attacking the Baptists now, not religiously motivated either… Idiocy motivated maybe?

  2. Yeah, it probably doesn’t represent a religious or race war; it’s bored Methodist uni students deciding to torch churches. Nice, huh?

I did my BA and MA at a religious uni. I remember the time my wife and I almost got beaten up walking down the street because a car full of guys thought we were gay. Sometimes I just wish the religion stuff would stick a bit more with some people.

The ‘joke’ part is what gets me. If it’s a joke, they should have stopped at two. You know how a joke is less funny the more you hear it?
